Proven
Remedies For Relieving Heartburn & Indigestion
A sudden onslaught of heartburn and indigestion characterized by a telltale burning
sensation is a most unpleasant experience whenever it happens. However, if it comes in the middle of the night the
experience can be quite frightening and the thought that what gets rid of heartburn quickly will be uppermost
in your mind. Here are a few proven remedies for relieving heartburn and indigestion. You might find one or two of
them a bit “off the wall” but desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures and persistent heartburn is
certainly in that category.
Continuous Heartburn
Continuous heartburn is, for many people, a real
problem and usually associated with an everyday diet of the wrong foods but more especially so when taken during
the evening before retiring. Prime causes of heartburn include the usual suspects of alcohol, caffeine, fizzy
drinks, tomatoes and tomato based spicy sauces. Therefore, however tempting, you must help yourself by saying no to
these suspect foods and by saying no you are on the way to a cure for heartburn.
Duodenal
Ulcers
Fifty or
sixty years ago, eggs, milk and fish were seen as cures for duodenal ulcers and other digestive ailments. However,
it is now known that the proteins and fats in a glass of milk exacerbate the problem and produce more acid.
Therefore, it follows that it’s not a good idea to gulp down a glass of milk; it’s certainly not the
best thing for
heartburn.
Eating
Habits
Not only
what you eat but when you eat is often a contributory factor in assessing the causes of heartburn. Some medical
professionals advocate no food after 6.00 pm which, whilst probably the ideal, is not always possible in our modern
high-speed society. Nevertheless, the point is well made and it is certainly a good idea to stay away from food and
drink for around two hours before going to bed.
Some remedies for heartburn
Some
remedies for heartburn include various fruits and their juices with a banana being a favourite with many people as
it relieves the discomfort in a similar manner to an antacid. Other fruits well worth trying are pineapple and
pawpaw (papaya) as many folk see them, if not cures for heartburn, at least, very helpful in minimizing the
uneasiness.
Reduce
Heartburn Symptoms
A
favourite way to reduce heartburn symptoms is to immediately get a glass of water. Take the full glass, making sure
it is cool rather than ice-cold, followed by half a glass of water containing 15ml (tablespoon) of baking soda. One
caveat here; exercise some caution if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure.
If you
are feeling adventurous, brave or really desperate, 5ml (teaspoon) of vinegar is said by some folk to bring instant
relief if not a cure for heartburn. Apparently, one of the causes of heartburn is sometimes found to be a
deficiency of acid rather than an excess. In these cases the acid in the vinegar counterbalances the acid
deficiency in the stomach.
Persistent Heartburn
If you
suffer from continuous heartburn or perhaps persistent heartburn, it is always wise to consult your doctor; many of
the symptoms sometimes associated with heartburn can, on rare occasions, be other far more serious problems which
may need prompt medical attention. Therefore, do not assume that proven remedies for relieving heartburn &
indigestion will necessarily solve all your digestive ailments.
