Causes of Indigestion Pain

Causes of indigestion pain are often due to simple factors, which can be treated by having a healthier diet and taking over the counter medications.

However, there are some cases where more serious concerns are involved that require the help of your doctor for effective treatments to reduce the problem.

There are few instances where indigestion pain can be a symptom of other more severe health issues such as cancer or gallstone.

But it is always a good idea to seek your doctor’s advice especially if the symptoms of indigestion pain persist after taking over the counter medications.

Typical Causes Indigestion Pain

One of the common causes of indigestion pain is heartburn due to overeating or eating too many foods that are high in acid. In addition, acid reflux can also cause indigestion pain where the defective valve in the esophagus causes stomach acids to go up in the throat. Indigestion pain caused by acid reflux can be treated through changing eating habits and taking over the counter medications such as antacids.

Gastritis is another of the causes of indigestion pain wherein pain in the upper abdomen and stomach can also be experienced. Though stomach acids coming up to the esophagus is does not cause the pain in gastritis, the inflammation of the lining of the stomach is the major concern. There are a lot of different factors involved in gastritis and most of them can be treated by change in drinking and eating habits. It is recommended to reduce the consumption of alcohol and the use of pain relievers, which are the common causes of irritation of the lining of the stomach.

A more serious condition known as peptic ulcer can also cause indigestion pain. Peptic ulcer is a sore in the esophagus, small intestine of in the lining of the stomach. Indigestion pain caused by peptic ulcer differs from the lower belly up to the upper chest area, depending on the location of the ulcer. Taking too many pain relievers can cause peptic ulcer and gastritis because pain relievers tend to irritate the bowels.

Stomach cancer and gallstones are the most serious cases of indigestion pain. More serious treatments than simply changing diet or medication must be done for people who are suffering from stomach cancer and gallstones. Aside from vomiting and nausea, there can be more severe side effects of gallstones. On the other hand, issues involved in stomach cancer that are associated with indigestion pain should be treated immediately because usually the pain is caused by a developing tumor. In some occasions, blood can be present in the stool when there is a case of cancer.

It is necessary to consult your doctor if indigestion pain still persists because it may be associated with heart problems. With the close proximity of the heart, the upper stomach and the lower esophagus, heart attack can be a possible case connected with some causes of indigestion pain.
